9 Stars

// January 23rd, 2011 // No Comments » // blog

It has been 9 days Izzuddin has not been breastfed anymore. We are in the process of weaning him off entirely. Whenever he request “su”, I will refuse and he will actually cry. But then I will say to him “How many stars today?” and for instance “today u got 9 Stars!!”. I wanted to make some paper stars so he could have fun with the process but I have not had the opportunity to do so yet.

Later he will eventually request for “shu shu” which implies to his Dugro choc milk. I hope this weaning process will work. He does occasionally come and hug me and bites my nips from the outer side of my shirt…haha geram kot.

Izzuddin, you got 9 STARS today :)

Izzuddin Ammar at 20months

// June 28th, 2010 // 5 Comments » // blog

Let’s see what Ammar can do now:

1. Say “O’oooo” if he mistakenly did something wrong.

2. Remove his sandals and put the sandals on the shoe rack.

3. Ask for “mamam” if he’s hungry.

4. Can sometimes repeat what we like to say. For example “ampu” after we show the lamps, “shedap” when we eat and say “sedap” and “pooh” while watching My Friends Tigger and Pooh.

5. Excited looking at real life animals & pet either in real life or from the TV box.

6. He remembers some part of the scenes on the video shows that he usually watch from youtube and will act them out earlier than the scene itself.

7. Punch everybody!!

8. Likes to wear his kupiah or abi’s kupiah, stand straight on the sejadah and then perform his prayers. If abi takes his wudhu’ and forgets to ask Ammar to come and pray together, he’ll cry his lungs out coz abi forgot him. Sometimes ask abi to read the Quran, and he likes looking at the words in the Quran. After reading, he’ll say “Ammm…” meaning Amin.

9. His hair in the front is already long… but sayanglah nak cut the hair. He really looks like a Japanese Chinese boy now.

10. His favourite series is My Friends Tigger and Pooh, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Special Agent Oso and Dibo the Gift Dragon.

11. He can create his own conversation when he reaches the phone and talks to the other person on the line. As if there is so much to talk about. If his Mak Yana calls, very talkative he will be (“,)

Izzuddin Ammar already 20 months, and is  still breastfed during night and weekends. 4 more months before weaning! Teruskan usaha, Ummi!

Away – Cancelled!!

// June 24th, 2010 // 7 Comments » // blog

It’s final. I’m going there for a week. Flight will be this Saturday night.

And I’m not bringing Izzuddin coz abi doesn’t want to tag along and do nothing there.

Sob.. sob… :(

A bit hard for me, coz I’ve never been so far away for days from my precious baby. For sure he will miss me and of course I will miss him from afar.

Is it time already, for us to leave him on his own at night??

With no night-breastfeeding, is it time to wean him at 20 and a half months?

He will definitely merajuk dengan umminyer.  not anymore!!

He will definitely masam when he listens to my voice.

He will show his sad face on the laptop camera whenever we Skype… oh, so many sad thoughts already playing in my mind.

I’m sure to miss Izzuddin (and abi too!) a lot!! :(

Trying to be optimistic in a way…. I hope this separation will keep our bond and relationship much stronger, InsyaAllah.

UPDATE: Meeting postponed until further notice!!!!!!!!!!! Great news for Izzuddin and abi. Not really good news for me coz I was soo anticipating of going to France. Dar*…. if meeting resumed, it’ll be in September. What?? September RAYAlah Mr!!!

Efforts to switch FM, perlu kah??

Remember this post

I was so desperate to find a formula milk that Izzuddin can drink but he rejected most of the milk that I gave him. I even bought 1kg of Dumex Dugro Cereal just so that he will try drinking something sweet, but nope.. hopeless. And at that time, it was already crucial coz we can’t really rely on fresh milk and UHT only (which Izzuddin really2 likes!)

I no longer think about the highest DHA, AAAA, immunofortis and those additional stuff they put in FM.
(FM bought was Enfagrow and you know the price!)
I am now concerned that he needs a drink that can quench his thirst and at the same time provide him calcium & protein. Yes, if dia tak particular,  I might be giving the best or expensive FM available in the market, but thinking that most FM will taste a bit similar, i passed this choice.

Until one of my officemate suggested, Dumex Dugro Choc… she said her daughter drank that sampailah umur dia sekarang 6years. oooh… i thought, maybe Izzuddin is like his abi, cannot drink anything ‘white’.. but susu coklat boleh (as long as he doesn’t see the white thing)
hmmm… really eh?
So I went to Carrefour and bought the smallest packet of Dumex Dugro Choc Lazat 1+.
Takdelah small pun, i don’t even  remember the grams of the packet.
And balik2 I bancuh skit masuk cawan… and gave him the cup. He sipped and macam suka. Again he sipped again… and again… and again….
Wah.. wah…
This is something interesting… hehe..
So now what? Boleh masuk botol plak tak??
I tried…. Nope. He doesn’t want to even drink it.
So I poured the milk into the cup again… and he continued sipping it.
YES! FINALLY!!!

(Rugi tak amik any pics of him sipping the milk. I was busy holding the cup, anyway)

So there you go… he chose this one in particular.
And his way of drinking the milk, is by a cup. No, sippie cup pun tak boleh… he refused it.
Nak minum macam orang besar. Cheh!

By the way, how did I convince him drinking the milk if it was choc colour anyway.
The day before, I poured his favourite UHT choc flavour Dutch Lady into the cup.. and asked him to drink it. He liked it that he can see the colour, so he drank it coz it was sweet… so yeah, first step succeeded.
So the next step was to give the same cup and when he looked at the colour, same… so of course he drank the FM!! So now I’m happy :D
When abi saw this, his first reaction “Berapa harga susu ni??“
Yeah, I’m sure this will be your concern after this , after we stop giving him EBM.
But luckily, your son pilih susu murah… so don’t think it will burden our pockets.
Nursery pun dah bagi feedback, he drinks it in the cup, but will drink it from the blue straw UHT tu.
He’ll drink half a cup and stop… so basically this is the FM I will be giving to nursery.

pic source : Dumex website
But since knowing that I won’t be going for duty travel as scheduled… is it really necessary?
Some mothers also think that its the right time to even wean him completely.
But when I pump, I still will get at least 4oz + 4 oz… so to compliment this, I’ll be sending 2bottles x 3oz , 1 UHT and the rest is FM. I’ll start this week. So later on, we can stop sending UHT and give it only when he’s at home.
So if somebody can suggest a cubic bottle/cup that has a straw please telll me ah…
so we don’t have to burden nursery and he can drink the FM by himself without tumpah sana sini.

I guess I am a bit relieved, sbb no pressure on collecting EBM stock anymore.
But i’m sure gonna miss this routine task once Izzuddin really does wean off nanti.
That’s another episode for us to face later.

Transport EBM on flight – Part 2

// April 23rd, 2010 // No Comments » // Uncategorized

Though my trip overseas dah kena postpone (just got to know it!) – I promised to give some info on transporting EBM. here’s an article i found very useful.

*************************

More and more mothers are traveling with expressed breast milk – with or without a baby. Given the current restrictions on airline travel, here is an article with suggestions on how best to transport EBM.

Traveling with Breastmilk
By Kittie Frantz, RN, CPNP-PC
Web Exclusive – March 16th, 2007

When our country goes to orange alert at the airports, everyone is asked to endure the minor inconveniences required to pass through security checkpoints. One group of travelers in particular faces additional challenges: mothers traveling without their children, but with expressed breastmilk. Primarily this means working, breastfeeding moms traveling for business. Conventional wisdom has been to keep pumped breastmilk on ice, so women often took it in their purse or carry-on bag.(1) Now, however, toting breastmilk in your carry-on bag without a baby in tow is apparently “suspicious”—and thus subject to highly specific packaging guidelines. According to the latest information at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website, breastmilk must adhere to the same “3-1-1″ carry-on guidelines as other liquids, gels and aerosols: it is required to be in containers three ounces or less and, if you have more than one, all the containers must be placed in a 12 ounce zip top plastic bag. These bags must be declared prior to entering the checkpoint. Only one 12 ounce bag of (three ounce or less) containers is allowed per traveler, thereby rigidly limiting the amount of breastmilk that a mother traveling without her child can carry. Ironically, the TSA policy also notes that breastmilk can be carried on in “unlimited quantities” by a mom traveling with her child —despite the fact that she could nurse baby and therefore wouldn’t need to pump and carry precious breastmilk. The bad news is that these carry-on regulations seem to stack the deck against the multitude of mothers who pump and travel without their babies. The good news is that breastmilk, as with other liquids and gels, can be transported in larger quantities in checked baggage.

The even better news is that, according to new findings in the journal Breastfeeding Medicine (2), checking breastmilk is actually a fine option. The researchers took frozen breastmilk and thawed it, refroze it, refrigerated it and left it out at room temperature. Essentially, they beat it up. What did they find? Breastmilk is fairly robust and does not grow bacteria easily nor lose vitamins A and C or free fatty acids (FFA) to any degree that would harm a full term baby. Breastmilk fresh from the breast or thawed in a clean container can be left at room temperature for less than 8 hours.(3) (4) This means on a day trip, you can safely pack expressed breastmilk in your checked bag and take it home just as it is. Lets consider the example of Los Angeles to Phoenix and back for a day meeting: you nursed at 7am and headed off to the airport. You pumped at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. and were home by 5:30 p.m.—less than eight hours from pumping, at room temperature. The cargo holds of airplanes are cold at 30,000 feet so all the better. Some of the manufactures of polyethylene plastic bags now have zip closures so they won’t leak during travel. However, polyethylene bags rob the milk of some of the immune factors (5) so some companies make polypropylene hard plastic bottles with screw or snap on lids for storing breastmilk. A little bulkier, but also won’t leak in transport.

Thawed breastmilk can stay in the refrigerator for 24 hours. Fresh breastmilk in a clean container can stay in a refrigerator for less than eight days (6). Fresh breastmilk can stay in an insulated bag with frozen gel packs for 24 hours. (7) Refrigerator temperatures are 38 – 45° F. An insulated pack with frozen gel packs is 60° F (3). Your pumped milk in the hotel refrigerator is fine for a week business trip. The milk coming home in your checked luggage in an insulated pack with frozen gel packs for 24 hours will work also.

What do you do with frozen milk you pumped on your trip? Don’t mess with ice. Ice is warmer than frozen milk and will actually hasten to thaw your milk (8). This is because water freezes at 32° F and milk freezes at around 0° F. Use frozen gel packs to keep your frozen milk frozen longer in your insulated cooler in your checked luggage. Crumple paper all around the milk and gel packs to further insulate it. The study in Breastfeeding Medicine found that even if the milk thaws, it is good to use provided it was not at room temperature for more than eight hours. If it is cool when you unpack it—it is good to go. It is also safe to be refrozen. (9) This is important because moms think they have to use it right away if thawed and may feed it to the baby instead of actually breastfeeding as soon as they get home. Better to get baby on the breast as soon as you return home, and refreeze or refrigerate the pumped milk for the next mother-baby separation.

Some clever working traveling mothers on an extended trip ship their frozen milk home in dry ice. Check with UPS, Federal Express, Airborne, or DHL for how much dry ice they will allow and what the cost will be shipped. The bigger hotels with a business center will arrange shipping for you for an extra fee. One mother opened her own account with one of the shipping companies and then left the package of milk packed in dry ice with the hotel’s desk clerk. She called the shipping company to arrange for a pick-up every morning at the hotel and had it billed to her account. She stayed in residence hotels that had a refrigerator/freezer in the unit. Grandma got the expressed package the next day and the milk was still frozen. Expensive you say? If you were to purchase breastmilk from a milk bank, it often costs $3.00 per ounce from a non-profit milk bank and even more than that from a for-profit milk bank. Dry ice and shipping costs may come close to this cost in value but it is well worth it. Better than cow milk or soy based formulas.

Remember, if you breastfeed and need to travel without your child, you have options. Pack and carry-on according to “3-1-1″ guidelines, or store and stow in checked luggage with confidence, based on the research presented above. Concerned about what might happen if your checked baggage is searched? Insulated bags that are foil lined will show up as a black box on x-ray and will have to be looked into. So it is best to use padded insulated bag that does not use metal foil. One mother printed out a note on her computer with her baby’s picture on it that said: “This is refrigerated breastmilk for my precious baby girl, Amy. Please handle with care and close the container quickly so it stays cold.” She taped the note to the top of the bag. Breastmilk is not a bio-hazard substance so it needs no special handling precautions. (10) Dry ice may not be permitted on airplanes so don’t use it in your checked luggage unless the airline says it is OK.

Breast is best, and it is worth following protocol to transport it. Due to reports of some TSA agents not being fully informed on the correct policy, consider printing a copy of the regulations from the TSA site and carrying them with you when you travel—in the event you encounter any confusion, you can refer directly to them.

Transport EBM on flight – Part 1

// April 14th, 2010 // No Comments » // Uncategorized

Found this regulation in a link

Exceptions to liquid carry-on restrictions for passengers with disabilities:
Small amounts of baby formula and breast milk if a baby or small child is traveling. While baby formula and breast milk will be permitted past the screening checkpoint and on board, please be aware that these items will be subject to physical inspection. You will not be required to taste these liquids in the presence of a security officer.
Yeah, I will need to get a reference doctor to transport the EBM next month.
Coz I won’t be bringing the baby with me.

Last time I transported EBM was in Singapore, and the security post guard asked “Where is the baby??”
So this time I need to prepare… and actually I need to prepare so much more things coz its gonna be a long week there.
If I don’t transport the EBM, I might have to redha that Izzuddin will be on FM… I’m expecting him to be used to the FM anyway after the whole week without me…

What’s your say?

efforts to switch to FM

// April 13th, 2010 // 2 Comments » // Uncategorized

izzuddin tak suka susu FM.

or maybe coz I was the one giving it to him, of course lah dia taknak kan…
kena tinggalkan dia kejap ngan hubby dia or adik ipar nnt, pastu suruh diorang try plak.

however, thinking of trying other FM until we succeed.

i just cannot get as much EBM for may (ehem..ehem) to leave him for a week.
so will need to teach him on FM FAST!

and knowing that i can get around 10oz per day at the office, its just not enough.
redha yg umminyer dpt BF till he’s 18M. itu pun dah campur2 minum air susu kotak, jus.
moga2 berjayalah switch to FM in a short time :D

p/s : please note that i will continue BF during night time once dah berjaya ni. no worries pro-BF mommies :D

berat hati tp perlu cuba

// March 31st, 2010 // 6 Comments » // Uncategorized

tp which FM yg izzuddin nak minum?? dia memang dah cerewet pilih makanan/minuman.

so kena cuba sampai berjaya kan…

first trial: lactogen2. letak kt nursery since umur setahun. tp nursery kt mmg dia taknak minum.

second trial: enfagrow original. dia tak suka langsung rasa susu FM ni.

third trial: sustagen junior perisa vanilla. ni dapat sampel. mula2 try guna sudu, dia minum. bila cuba ngan botol, terus dia taknak.

forth trial: nan2… bapak mahal tin susu kecik dia… try gak, taknak. ku rasa, ada similar ngan susu ibu, tak rasa pekat mcm FM lain. tp kurang manis mcm susu ibu. (aik… ku pernah rasa ker? hahah.. of course!)

fifth trial: dutch lady 123 choc. taknak gak kalau kasi dlm botol susu… tak pernah plak try guna cawan.

ok, then we stopped for a while, and now we supply him with 3oz x 3 bottles of EBM and 2dutch lady kotak either choc or full cream. yg UHT ni mmg takde problem nak minum…
will still try again on the FM bought, sbb sayang kan susu tu…

anybody got good tips on how to persuade him on FM??
please, need the advice really much.

bukannya ku taknak pam lagi dah. its just we really need a backup if something happens.
dan ku masih feed dia di malam hari.
and at the same time, this will  be the time for us to make him more independant…
taklah bergantung sangat pada ummi nyer… sekarang ni izzuddin bergantung sgt sbb rindukan susu umminya.

the only drawback of formula is, kena selalu panaskan air panas (boleh guna water heater yg simpan air tu) dan kena basuh botol, puting which hmmm.. sangat malas ok.

maybe i should just use botol biasa ngan puting biasa? or maybe cawan je? sbb dia dah set in mind, dalam botol adalah susu ummi sahaja. so apa sahaja yg lain, dia uwekkan… kalau ada video mmg nak letak je kt blog ni.
sape2 ada suggestion??

higher rate

Found this link and saw statement below….

Women who were formula-fed as infants have higher rates of breast cancer

Freudenheim, J. et al. 1994 Exposure to breast milk in infancy and the risk of breast cancer. Epidemiology 5:324-331. [For both premenopausal and postmenopausal breast cancer, women who were breastfed as children, even if only for a short time, had a 25% lower risk of developing breast cancer than women who were bottle-fed as infants.]

*******
since i was breastfed for 3 months only, this does applies to me.
hmm… gotta do a routine self-examination on my breast…

i never actually wrote about this..
previously during my pregnancy i noticed a lump…
i was pregnant, no specific check could be done.
but i was referred to a 3D ultrasound scan in kelana jaya, just to make sure this lump was not dangerous.

after pregnancy the lump was still there, referred myself to another medical specialist.
an ultrasound machine was also used as they said i was too young to do a mammogram.
after the scanning, radiologist verified that the lump on my right breast was not malignant, or not similar to a tumor.
however she highlighted that there was a cyst developing on the left breast.
i have yet to schedule my next appointment.
macam terlupa about it.. i think i did that check when i was breastfeeding izzuddin at 6 months.

takut kan??

but this statement kinda made me relieved (just a bit):

Newcomb, P.A. et al. 1994 Lactation and a reduced risk of premenopausal breast cancer. The New England Journal of Medicine 330(2):81-87. ["An increasing duration of lactation was associated with a statistically significant trend toward a reduced risk of breast cancer (P<0.001). Lactation at early ages and for long durations was associated with more substantial reductions in risk. If women who do not breastfeed or who breastfeed for less than 3 months were to do so for 4 to 12 months, breast cancer among parous premenopausal women could be reduced by 11 percent, judging from current rates. If all women with children lactated for 24 months or longer, however, then the incidence might be reduced by nearly 25 percent. This reduction would be even greater among women who first lactate at an early age."]

ada hikmah di sebalik setiap kejadian…

sometimes you do need a break

// February 10th, 2010 // No Comments » // Uncategorized

i’ve never actually slept away from my little boy, ever… until last week.
there i was thinking… can they survive the night without me?
they, meaning abi and izzuddin together… and me nowhere to be seen.
i was much more concern about izzuddin.
the last time i left him long enough was during my tsssc dinner.
that was roughly until 1.30am arriving at my parent’s house and realizing he just drank two bottles of 3oz EBM since 3pm. what?? can u imagine how restless he could be?
even then mak messaged me saying izzuddin crying…
and looking at my sis expression, she seemed tired?? haha… kesian sangat mereka.

so this time, i left izzuddin with his abi, knowing that he might be experiencing the same situation.
already reminding him to supply EBM two days for nursery and also additional choc milk for ‘suka2′.
but when it came night time, as always he expected me to be there, for his normal ‘bergayut’ or ‘mengelendot’.
but i was nowhere to be seen…
abi gave him the choc milk, the EBM and even the FM that I just bought (i have another story about this) but he refused everything.
i think izzuddin might’ve slept because he was tired of crying… kesian sangat kan??
we had a teleconversation that night, and he was like ‘masam mencuka’ listening to my voice…
waahh… merajuk sudah!!
anyway, a part from them being so far away, it was the most sleepful night that day.
i slept at 11.45pm and woke up at 5.30am, tak bangun langsung. NYENYAK!!
i sooo missed those nights… really, a bliss for the year 2010.. haha..
another thing, i still pumped during my trip there, and brought back a good supply of milk.
so now, i’m not worried about my frozen stash anymore.
previously before my gateaway, the freezer only had 2 x 3oz of frozen EBM.
i expected abi to actually have used them, if izzuddin was drinking them but no, they were untouched.

 (“,) HAPPY kan??
sometimes you do need something like this to get another thing in return.
i love how life goes by :D
oh well, this is my supply at work for the day. Hope all BF mommies keep pumping ok.
Never give up, even though it stresses you out to get just enough out from your B… BM is the best nutrition food a baby can get.

*BM – breastmilk
*EBM – expressed breastmilk
*B – ? go figure… haha…
